The days of neighbors helping neighbors have not passed. The truth is that those days are still alive in Angie's List, a grassroots organization that helps consumers find good contractors and service providers. Founded by Angie Hicks in Columbus , OH , in 1995, Angie's List takes the “ask your neighbor” approach to a higher level.
Using detailed reports, submitted by members, Angie's List provides reliable, unbiased ratings on local service providers and contractors. Because members submit reports each time they hire a service provider, ratings are current and reliable, and reflect the most recent feedback received on a particular company.
Members are asked to submit a report each time they've hired a service provider for a job. Members rate the service provider – A, B, C, D or F – on seven different items: Overall Experience, Price, Quality of Work, Responsiveness, Punctuality, Professionalism, and Would you hire this company again?
Ratings and information from every report filed on a particular company are then compiled to provide an average rating for that company.
Members have unlimited access to the List, and when they need a particular service, they simply choose the category and are then provided with a list of companies , starting with those who have an average rating of A or B.
Additionally, members can access comments from the reports filed on a company to learn more about their neighbors' experiences with that particular company.
Angie's List compiles ratings in more than 250 different service categories. As a result, consumers can find the information they need to hire service providers on just about any issue imaginable, whether it's a large-scale home remodeling project, an emergency repair to their car, or even to plan a wedding or take the best care of their pet.
Members can also count on Angie's List to go to bat for them if they have problems with a company they hire. Through our Complaint Resolution Service, Angie’s List will contact the company and attempt to resolve the issue. Companies that don't respond end up in the Penalty Box , and are listed in the Angie's List magazine for three months.
Keeping it honest: Because Angie’s List relies on its members’ experiences, reviews aren’t submitted anonymously. Of course members’ information is kept confidential on the List, but reports are made available to the companies who have been reviewed. Since there are always two sides to every story, companies can respond to reviews, helping make sure that members get all the information they need to make a hiring decision. Additionally, members can only report on a specific company once every six months, ensuring no one can "stack the deck" in favor of or against a company. Finally, all reviews submitted by members go through a team of Angie’s List staff who look for any irregularities or red flags. Occasionally, we catch service companies reporting on their own businesses. Those companies are promptly and permanently removed from the List.
